Foxtel
1+1+1 = Hit.
When Foxtel needed to infuse some fresh energy to it's dedicated TV Hits Channel, 111 Hits, a creative use of illustration was a natural fit as the most effective way to bring new life into some classic TV Shows such as ER, Law & Order, Friends, and many more.
Taking inspiration from the 1985 rotoscoped music video for 'Take On Me', directed by Steve Barron, Jacky Winter artist Anthony Calvert from The Bowery brought his expert pencil renderings to the party, illustrating characters from keyframes for eight separately animated idents. These illustrations were used as a departure point to transition from the live-action footage to the bold typographic animation of the 111 Hits 'Equation', which spelled out the essential ingredients that make a hit show. For us though, it's still Illustration + Animation = Flutter.

Original Pencil Sketches
The original brief called for a loose pencil style executed in four layers to allow for the animation effect to be fully realised in the transition from live-action.
Original Watercolour Pencil Reference
The original reference created in-house by 21-19 shows the birth of the concept, and a much more traditional and organic transition effect.
Concept Refinement
The pencil concept was further refined to a more posterised 'stencil-like' illustration in order to capture the bold spirit of the rest of identity, bringing a somewhat retro concept into a more contemporary setting.
Stencil Wireframe
Anthony adapted quickly to the change in direction, bringing his original pencil-work into Adobe Illustrator and making bold vector adaptations to match the approved style.
